What’s there Circular walk round lake – takes about 30 mins.  Nice cafe. Boats in summer.  Children’s playground.
Comments Very nice if just want to pop out for a bit.

What’s there Lake, three marked walks, good childrens playground
Comments Well maintained park with interesting bits and bobs along the way

Comments First impressions were good then did not live up to them… Worth a second chance though.

Comments Well worth a visit but probably only if weather is good. Good place to relax and enjoy the views. Can also combine with Cromford visit.

What’s there Walks of different lengths from the visitors centre. The Major Oak. 6/7 mile walk ‘Pathfinder Guide -Sherwood Forest and the East Midlands’ page 52 Cycle track through the woods – about 10 miles.
Comments Preferred cycling option to walking.

What’s there Small walks around grounds and lake Adventure playground very good fun if quite difficult! (not for small children) Indoor displays…good to play with.  OKish cafe. Small train to separate area.
Comments Adventure playground makes the day. Walks a bit too small and bitty to get into. Will remember the bare foot trail if only for strangeness value.

What’s there Small walk, mainly around lake. Caves – these are blocked but there are regulr tours. Cafe with excellent views.
Comments Not a huge amount there but worth a visit if in the area. Spot the swan eggs?

What’s there Woodland and lakeside walks. Sculpures. Shops and cafes.
Comments Lots to see. Nice shops and cafe (sausages good!). Very well kept. Big enough but not if want a very long walk.

Baslow and Curbar Edges

What’s there Excellent edge walk, superb views. 7 mile walk – ’50 Walks in the Peak District’ Walk 21.
Comments Walk along Baslow, Curbar and Froggatt edges – amazing views, impressive rocks and crags, moorland. Breezy! Well worth the initial climb. Good stopping points along the walk to refuel.

Monsal Dale

What’s there Very picturesque dale. 5.5 mile walk – ’50 Walks in the Peak District’ Walk 27.
Comments Parking is in Ashford in the Water, a lovely village. Walk starts nice enough, then reach Monsal and the extremely beautiful dale appears. Nice cafe in Monsal to stop before enjoying the dale.

Dovedale

What’s there Many walks in the area – the most obvious being to Milldale through a limestome ravine with caves to explore along the way and stepping stones over the River Dove. Choice of hills to climb.
Comments Beautiful – only possible drawback being that it is very popular so can be busy.

How far 55 mins / 33 miles – avoiding Matlock would be good at weekends.
What’s there Beautiful dale walk. 5 mile walk – ’50 Walks in the Peak District’ Walk 32.
Comments Lovely dale walk, reasonably gentle. Most of walk in dale. One lot of steps. Can park at 2nd parking sign to avoid hill into Over Haddon if feeling lazy.

Longshaw Estate and Padley Gorge

 

How far 1 hour / 36 miles
What’s there Moorland, picturesque gorge with ancient woodland, country park. 4.5 mile walk – ‘Pathfinder – Peak District Walks’ Walk 5.
Comments Beautiful varied scenery throughout the walk. Two convenient stopping points at Grindleford Station (bit basic) and Longshaw.

Castleton and Mam Tor

 

How far 1 hour 13 mins / 49 miles (S33)
What’s there 6 mile walk – ‘Pathfinder – Peak District Walks’ Walk 11. Option of shorter walk up Mam Tor from nearby car park.
Comments Stunning views from Mam Tor and excellent ridge walk. Good pub (Castle). Also could visit the nearby caves, or Peverill Castle. Very highly recommended. Can be windy!

What’s there Castle / Theme park. Bit odd.
Comments Hmmm, really not too sure. However, weather did not help, plus only went on a whim. Definitely would not pay full price though (£18 per person! Check for BOGOF leaflet in gift shop).

What’s there Safari park, amusement park, shows.
Comments Very full day, lots to see walking about, didn’t even make the shows.  Safari park was excellent – highlight was when the giraffes put their heads into the car.
